Excessive Sweating Q & A

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which you experience excessive sweating in the underarms. The sweating isn’t necessarily related to heat.

You may sweat so much that it soaks your clothes and drips uncomfortably. Antiperspirants can’t control your sweating, so it disturbs your daily activity and can cause social anxiety.

What is miraDry® for excessive sweating?

A thermal energy treatment, miraDry eliminates bothersome sweat and odor glands. Your body has 2-4 million sweat glands. While you do need some of these for proper body temperature regulation, eliminating the mere 2% under your arms won’t negatively affect your health.

The miraDry system uses a process called thermolysis to eliminate the overactive sweat glands. You’ll continue to sweat normally from other areas of your body, and your body will still be able to regulate its temperature.

How does Botox® help reduce excessive sweating?

Botox is made from a purified neurotoxin that temporarily blocks the secretion of the bodily chemical that turns on your sweat glands. You receive the Botox injections just under the skin in the armpit area.

Are treatments for excessive sweating safe?

Botox and miraDry are proven safe, and the FDA has cleared them for use in reducing underarm sweat. Both treatments are quite tolerable.

Prior to a miraDry treatment, the technician applies local anesthesia to keep you as comfortable as possible. Then the handpiece applies the thermal energy to target your sweat glands while keeping your skin cool.

Botox is injected with very fine needles, and most people tolerate the sessions quite well. If you’re concerned about sensation, request a topical numbing cream to ease any discomfort.

You need little to no downtime following Botox and miraDry treatments. You can resume your daily regular activities, but in some cases, you may need to refrain from strenuous physical activity for a few days.

The team at Advanced Laser and Cosmetic Center provides you with aftercare instructions.

How effective are treatments for excessive sweating?

The miraDry procedure provides 82% sweat reduction and 89% odor reduction following treatment. You experience the results immediately, and they’re permanent.

Botox injections result in an 82-87% reduction in sweating. You’ll notice results within 2-4 days after you receive injections, but optimal results take about two weeks. You experience a decrease in sweating for up to 12 months, with some people experiencing relief for up to 14 months.
