A laser emits wavelengths of light that penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the tattoo’s ink particles. That causes the ink particles to instantly shatter into tiny fragments, while leaving the surrounding skin tissue intact. Over the next few weeks, the body’s immune system naturally flushes away the ink fragments, which causes the tattoo to fade. Repeated sessions are required, with more and more of the ink breaking up, eventually leaving the skin looking tattoo-free.
No one laser can remove all tattoos. Different laser wavelengths are required to remove different colors of tattoo ink. This is because some colors of tattoo ink absorb certain wavelengths of light better than others. It is important that the provider you consider to remove your tattoo understands this and has the proper technology to address all the colors of your tattoo specific needs.
There is definitely some discomfort. How much depends on the individual’s sensitivity, as well as, the size, age, and colors of the tattoo. We always offer patients free of charge, topical and local anesthetic applied in advance to numb the treatment area.
